Another Day
Theology in the Trenches
by Kathleen Kjolhaug

Tonight, as the moon sheds light across the farm yard, my eyes catch the moon’s reflection upon the pile of metal resting in the weeds.  It would have been a non-existent glimmer had it been one night ago.  You see, the vehicle wasn’t in the weeds yesterday.  Its usual parking spot was a stone’s throw away alongside the others driven on a regular basis.  Now, permanently parked, it serves as a reminder.

The morning began like any other, and with a destination three hours away, leaving early was paramount.  The day was bright, sunny, and carefree.  Preparations had begun a few days prior and routine registered all systems go.  A clean bill of health was given to the little maroon wonder which had covered many a mile for the recent college graduate.

With friends to see and places to go, the miles added up.  However, old faithful was as true as ever and never missed a beat…until…

Someone stopped.  Someone stopped in the middle of the road as the car treaded along the tar.  One, two, three, four cars ahead and with brakes screeching…one, two, three, and four all made the swift stop needed.  However, number five’s reaction time wasn’t what it needed to be and as the pickup in front screeched to a stop, its backend went up and the front end of the maroon wonder went down; thus the two did meet.

He walked away.

As the moon reflects down upon the scrunched up piece of mental, I look up and say, “Thank you.”  There are simply no other words.  “Thank you.”

Tomorrow is another day, and I am thankful.  I am thankful for another day.

James 4:13-17 says it best. “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit.’ – Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.  What is your life?  For, you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”

Psalm 121 proclaims,“From where does my help come?  My help comes from the Lord.”  Amen.
