Fittin In...Workin Out

Fitting In Without Working Out

Theology in the Trenches

Muscle tones, vocal tones, instrumental tones have strands which connect.  That being, authentic replication is impossible without due diligence.  One may purchase cheap imitations and mimic; those fit for a bit.  For a while, all might look like the real deal until you put next to it the original.  Suddenly, the fake can be spotted.  Lip syncing life styles last for a song or two, but true artists croon away at  mastery through work outs, practice, and putting in their due.  In-other-words, in order become like those we admire, it takes hard work.  Then and only then will the likelihood of authentic achievement be possible.

Case-in-point:  I was at a workshop one day and the talented presenter made the day go by quickly as she flawlessly unfolded the information we needed.  She had flown in and was talking about how her job takes her to several places around the world.  On her way out we had a short conversation, and I asked her if she enjoyed her work.  Without hesitation, she enthusiastically told me about it.  I then ventured to ask if the company for which she worked ever needed consultants.  I envisioned myself doing what she did.  It looked fun.

She invited me into conversation by mentioning that they were looking for trainers once in a while and then politely went on to expound upon her credentials.  Educator of the year in this area, educator of the year in that area, a degree here, another one there, and as she dashed off to her car, I did likewise.  Her bucket was full and what she knew was much deeper than what appeared on the surface.  Her knowledge base was broad; she had earned the right to stand in front and do what she did.  She was authentic.

I once heard that if you want to know if a monetary bill is counterfeit, the best way to become an expert is to study the real deal.  That way, when the fake one comes across, you can, without a doubt, spot it.  You will be prepared because you know authentic.

I’ve heard something similar about Jesus Christ.  I’ve heard it said that if you want to be able to discern what is of God, Jesus Christ, do not study that which is false.  Study that which is true.  Know Him, and you will discern what is not of Him.  It’s really quite that simple.

Lord God, authentic is what You are and authenticity is what you have to offer.  Heb. 13:20-21 drives it home.  “Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ. To Whom be the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
