First Wonder of the World...BEEN THERE!

As I Went Walking Down the Street

With a little travel experience under my belt, I decided to explore a few “Wonders of the World” with the grandkids. One phone call was all it took and arrangements were made. All inclusive was the only option; a deal just too good to pass up.

On the other end of the line I heard the receptionist say, “Yes, there is a bedroom available. You may spend the night grandma!” And so I did.

Up and at em early the next day found me munching Cheerios with the two little ones. Off for a book read or two, the laundry pile put away, and coloring in between diaper changes took up most of the morning.

About mid afternoon we voted on a wagon ride, and off we went. The neighborhood was quiet as we made our way down the sidewalk. Granted, it was the same path we’d walked six months earlier, but after hibernating all winter, it was as if they’d seen it for the first time.

With plenty of time on our hands, we meandered up and down the cement walkways. Birds chirped and were notably high on the priority list of things to observe. Bark upon trees was touched, and why some trunks had “springs” around them and others did not, remained a puzzle. Signs upon lampposts were questionable as little fingers touched, and words upon them deserved further inquiry.

Young ones passed on bikes and eager greeters from the wagon waved from their half of the sidewalk. When the passing parties didn’t acknowledge the wavers, one heart in particular demonstratively drooped. A quick explanation bringing new perspective helped revive.

“Do you know why they didn’t wave back? The rider needed both hands to hang on so they wouldn’t tip over!”

It appeared to buffer as down cast eyes quickly perked. Just as quickly I paused in prayer asking that as they grow, they be granted wisdom to be “wave returners” as they pass by little ones in wagons some day.

Rounding the final turn up the driveway, another little wanderer was spied about the same size. This one waved back, and a new friend was made.

Having the opportunity to visit the “First Wonder of the World,” a child’s heart, was worth the travel time as we embarked not only into the neighborhood, but into the world of discovery.

Matthew 6:21 puts it plain. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

As we go walking down the streets of life, may we view our travels through the eyes of a child whether it be round the block or round the world. May wonders never cease to amaze!   Amen.
